The Braveheart and Rob Roy Tour is a day tour from Glasgow or Edinburgh to some of the most historic sights in Central Scotland. First stop is the ancient city of Stirling with its fortified castle which sits guarding the cobbled streets of the old town down below. The surrounding area is steeped in the history of Scotland's Wars of Independence, directly below the castle sits Stirling Bridge, scene of the battle of the same name in 1297, made internationally famous by the hit movie Braveheart. A few miles to the east are the fields of Bannockburn where King Robert the Bruce, against all the odds, defeated the English army in 1314. Just to the north of Stirling sits the Wallace Monument, built on the Abbey Craig in the 1860's, this Victorian Gothic homage to William Wallace dominates the skyline of the carse of Stirling. Inside the tower is a small museum which contains Wallace's sword, taken from him after he was betrayed, captured near Glasgow and imprisoned in Dumbarton Castle.
From here we head up into the Ochill Hills offering stunning views over Central Scotland. Above the Cathedral city of Dunblane sits the battle site of Sheriffmuir, where in 1715 the Earl of Mar's Jacobite army fought inconclusively against government forces led by the Duke of Argyll. Divided loyalties forced Rob Roy MacGregor to watch the battle from a distance, leading to accusations that he was a government spy from some of his kinsmen.
Driving through the small city of Dunblane we pass the medieval cathedral which survived the reformation in tact. A few miles north of Dunblane brings us to the 14th century Doune Castle, ancient seat of the Dukes of Albany and setting for the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
The Braveheart and Rob Roy Scottish tour takes us west into the foothills of the Highlands and brings us to the small town of Callander, an old Roman fortification and home to the Rob Roy Visitor Centre. A tour through the lochs and glens of the Trossachs gives you a flavour of the area where Rob Roy grew up, lived life as an outlaw and was immortalised in books by Daniel Defoe and Sir Walter Scott. here we head back to Edinburgh via Lake of Menteith or to Glasgow via Glengoyne.
